Don’t think that a live version of a Linux desktop with the ability to save configuration changes is better than an operating system fully installed to a hard drive? Think again. Its persistent memory feature, unlike regular live distro sessions, lets you carry a complete Linux desktop with all of your files and special application settings in your pocket to run on any computer. Porteus boots from a USB drive or other bootable external media in as little as 15 seconds.
One of the most interesting new features of Porteus 2.1 is the ability of the web page to create a custom ISO for downloading, choosing the browser, GUI, initial sound volume, Proprietary Video Card Driver and much more.
You find it either on the porteus.org home page via download / desktop edition or with this link: http://build.porteus.org/
At least to me (I am a Porteus contributor since it's "Slax remix" days) this is a novelty for any of the Linux distros known to me.
Please check it out, and maybe you want to review the finale version as well.
The main characteristic of Slackware which makes it sordid is the four-letter word associated with it: 'w-o-r-k'. Slackware is THE distribution to use if one wants to build a customized, small and fast distribution.
Sounds to me that Porteus is almost exactly what we would all build from Slackware, if it weren't for that pesky 'work' thing.
Great article. Porteus may become my portable-distro-of-choice.
