Pinguy OS 18.04 is an Ubuntu-based distribution that offers a non-standard GNOME desktop environment intended to be friendlier for new Linux users. This distro is a solid Linux OS with a focus on simple and straightforward usability for the non-geek desktop user. If you do not like tinkering with settings or having numerous power-grabbing fancy screen animations, Pinguy OS could be a good choice. The GNOME desktop is the only user interface, but the developer included some software options not usually packaged with GNOME.
Why stop people from putting icons on the desktop? Isn't Linux suppose to be about choice? If I don't want desktop Icons, fine, I can just not put them there. Yet if I want desktop Icons some Desktops prevent me from putting them there. Why limit that choice?
1) Gone are the gEdit text editor in favor of Pluma
2) Some of the default GNOME apps have been replaced with MATE versions
Why not just use Mate? I am a big fan of Mate. Personally, for me, no Icons on the desktop eliminates the OS for me. I use Ubuntu Mate LTS. I also like GKrellM for my system monitor, though never see it mentioned on any OS. GKrellM is highly configurable, and can run one or multiple instances. It also can monitor temps for hard drives and CPU's.
Thank you so much for sharing such a nice article with us. Keep sharing such articles. Can I install Linux on XP Core i5 laptop? I tried once but didn't go through well.
The issue not being able to put the Recycle Bin, Network, Computer etc. on the Desktop (you can place files on there by default) is because the tweak tool for Gnome uses Nautilus. With Pinguy OS the desktop is drawn using Nemo.
The easiest way to turn on or off items on the desktop is to use the 'dconf Editor' and go to org/nemo/desktop. You can turn them off and on there.
May create a small app for the point release to make this easier.
