SoftMaker’s FreeOffice 2018 Linux office suite is a high-end product that provides performance and compatibility with Microsoft Office and other office suites. FreeOffice 2018 is a free version that is nearly identical to the features and user interface of Softmaker’s commercial flagship office suite, SoftMaker Office 2018. The FreeOffice 2018 suite is a capable alternative to its commercial upgrade. It poses little trouble reading and writing to other document formats and provides very accurate page rendering when importing/exporting.
I opened one of my Excel workbooks in PlanMaker and noted the following:
It's very, very, very slow
The workseets are in a different order
It gives me a lot of #N/A errors which I don't see in Excel
It claims there are circular references which Excel does not report
It doesn't support even the simplest Excel macro
Compatible with Microsoft Office? I don't think so.
Good write-up. I follow the office suite scene with interest. LO has been making solid, if slow, progress. The thing I would miss in switching to any other free suite is macros, which I use a lot of to clean up and format plain text off-copyright books. It does have a semblance of a ribbon available, but I consider the ribbon the preeminent example of detrimental change for change's sake. It's primary purpose is to sell more software, and it points to the sad herd-like state of the industry.
The ability to convert Excel macros would be a HUGE step along with VBA in general. Being able to programatically create documents in these formats would be awesome as well....I used to write an awful amount of code to automate creating Exel documents for reports.
FreeOffice Suite Is Almost Blue Ribbon-Worthy
