Microsoft will automatically upgrade earlier versions of its Internet Explorer browser beginning in January. The updates will be for PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, Redmond said. Users in Australia and Brazil who have turned on the automatic update feature in Windows Update will be the first to have their browsers automatically updated, and Microsoft will roll out this capability elsewhere over time. Customers will be given the ability to opt out of the automatic browser updates.
Basically I think Enterprise is stuck with older browser versions because of their refrain from adopting a newer OS. If you stick with XP your options for a more recent version of IE is limited. This is Microsoft making yet another mistake with IE 9. With IE 9 Microsoft tried to nudge Enterprise to adopt Windows 7 too and it flopped.
Let's face it, Microsoft has a real problem with its Windows user base who do not adopt new versions as easily as the Apple user base. That not only hurts compatibility but hurts Microsoft in sales. Instead of implementing a automatic browser update. Microsoft needs to just stop supporting Windows XP and older OS's. Because IE is so tied to the OS. Microsoft needs to realize in their situation its not the browser but the OS that is holding users back.
