Microsoft apparently is looking to make so-called virtual reality an actual reality with what it calls an “immersive display experience,” based on a patent application
published last week. The patent application, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2011, would allow a standard video game system with a connected “environmental display” to project an image that “appears to surround the user.” This certainly sounds like something out of science fiction, but can it become something of science fact?
Sigh.. So, they are patenting the use of a projector, to display game content on more than one wall? How the hell is that even a legal patent.
As to "holodecks". The problem here is that the only known means of generating light in mid air, if you wanted to do that, is via a plasma reaction, using lasers, or by filling the room of asphyxiating/poisonous gasses. So... You can die from lack of air, or being burned to a cider, while playing with the pretty landscape its generating... lol
Because, any other technology, such as projectors, even if you including something like polarized video, is already covered by patents on the projection technology, and all your are doing is patenting, "Using a lot of them at the same time, together, attached to a game console." Which, again, is a WTF?
