Windows has been through four major changes. Huge numbers of folks really didn’t like them — each one was painful. Windows almost had five major changes, but Microsoft Bob was so badly received Microsoft killed it. Windows 8 may seem like the most painful, but since I’ve lived through all of these I can say from experience that it isn’t even close. As I recall, Windows XP wasn’t really liked very much at first either — and now around half of PC users like it so much they don’t want to give it up.
Hi Rob - we must be around the same age - I too started with DOS and moved through each version of Windows - exception was Bob (and downgrade from Vista).
My team and I love Windows 7.
As a business with no touch-enabled software, what would you see as the benefit to eventually moving to Windows 8?
Seriously look at the screencaps of Win 8.1 and what do you see? Its STILL Win 8! Still the same metro mess nobody wants, the "start menu" is a lie, its just a button that takes you right back to metro (where nobody wants to go in the first place) and it has not changed one. single. thing. that people loathed about Windows 8!
Unless they practically give it away, we are talking $25 or less because they sold Win 8 for $40 and had less than 4 million sales, then i predict we'll be seeing our first double bomb for MSFT, thus breaking the so called Star Trek Rule.
The sad part is it would be simple to make Win 8.1 a hit, just give the people CHOICE, give people the option of a full Win 7 desktop or the Metro UI on first boot and the ability to change from one to the other if they choose, and it would be another Win 7 hit.
But we all know the REAL reason why it'll never happen, and why Ballmer will torpedo the company rather than give people that choice, its because he dreams of Apple walled gardens where he gets a 30% cut of every single program sold for Windows. but he can dream all he wants, its not happening, before people go to the mess that is Metro they'll switch to Apple or Google as evidenced by the news that Acer is already over double digits when it comes to Chromebooks and climbing.
You give the people want they want or they will go somewhere else, its really as simple as that.
Could Windows 8.1 Be the New XP?
