Nvidia and Baidu recently made an announcement with regard to self-driving cars that deserves closer attention. China currently is behind the U.S. in automotive technology, but it has passed the U.S. and Japan in automobile production — I actually thought Japan was still ahead. China is producing twice the number of cars the U.S. is producing right now. If these things get smart, our next illegal immigration problem could be Chinese autonomous cars trying to find a country that is less polluted!
Self driving won't prosper just in the US. Too many automotive companies won't find building self driving cars just for the US profitable. No easily conversion right now available. Already most car models are being targeted for China's market. Why do you think many cars have 1.5 liter or less turbo engines? Because China gives breaks to any engine under 1.5 liters. This says volumes on how automakers are seeing benefits in China. Much of the world lacks road infrastructure for self driving vehicles and cannot afford investment. China especially probably won't see any kind of significant road improvements for a while. But more and more can afford cars. This is why most automakers are not jumping on any limited appeal and focusing on mass market cars in markets like China.
