The Novell v. Microsoft antitrust lawsuit entered its trial phase in the Utah U.S. District Court this week, with jury selection taking place on Monday. The case, which Novell originally filed in 2004, has traveled a long and winding road. Novell won the right to go forward with the trial in May 2011, when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit reversed a March 2010 summary judgment in favor of Microsoft. That ruling had been based on a technicality.
First of all, get the facts straight. Novell did not purchase the rights to WordPerfect or Quattro Pro until 1994. In the "late 1980s," WordPerfect was owned by WordPerfect Corporation and Quattro Pro was just getting started in its first DOS versions, created by Borland International.
Novell purchased these programs and others, including Presentations and InfoCentral also made by WordPerfect Corporation, in 1994 and released PerfectOffice 3.0 in 1994. This was the only version Novell released in Standard and Professional editions.
Novell later sold these and other software products to Corel Corporation in 1996. Novell has not owned WordPerfect or Quattro Pro since 1996.
These are the historical facts. As a collector of legacy computer software, I have original commercial disk sets of these products with their copyright dates clearly printed on their labels.
