Last week, Google started selling a very high-speed Internet and television service in Kansas City. This service stands a good chance of blowing customers’ minds and changing expectations. The question is, will Google get into this business and compete with cable television and phone companies? Or is it doing this just to make a point? Only time will tell. Even Google doesn’t know yet. Most of us currently get a few megabits of Internet download speed. Google offers 1 gigabit — about a thousand times faster. Incredible.
You know the sad part about this whole thing is the pathetic phone companies that simply could have buried fiber optic lines years ago and virtually controlled the data market. Would have kept them alive for decades. Instead their DSL lines are dial up quality even compared to the worst cable broadband setup. Fiber optics is certainly the future of passing large amounts of data to a lot of customers. Even now do you see anybody but Google and Verizon with their FIOS jumping on the bandwagon and dropping some fiber to homes? Why, because their is no real need felt by the customers and they are happy with cable broadband or even DSL. Its cheaper and its good enough. This is the drawback to faster delivery of technology like fiber optics. Will people be willing to accept the costs for the outstanding services it will bring?
