The uproar that erupted over Mozilla Foundation cofounder Brendan Eich’s appointment as CEO of its subsidiary Mozilla Corp. and resulted in his stepping down earlier this month perhaps was symptomatic of the troubles the foundation is going through, in that opposition to his taking the post had both political and technological dimensions. Mozilla came a cropper politically when opposition to Eich’s appointment arose on the grounds that he had contributed $1,000 to California’s anti-gay marriage Prop. 8 in 2008.
Mr. Eich is *not* an arsewhole for his moral views.. and we should not be outraged that he donated $1k/$2k of his own money to support opposition to gay marriage. What we should be worried and outraged about is that a small set of gay social media activists created such a chilling effect and forced Mr. Eich to resign, despite his intelligence and background. We need to be asking ourselves since when does a tiny minority of the population - somewhere between 1% and 3% of american men are openly gay, become a mafia that gets to terrorize anyone who opposes their anti-family agenda. Yea I said it.. most legal dictionaries still define a marriage as an agreement between a man and a woman, and a family as a husband, wife, and their children. Choosing to agree or disagree with that definition is the individual's right. And I'm tired of hearing that homosexuality is a culture, like being of African descent, or Latino descent, or European descent, or being a Muslim. Whether you believe it's a choice or a disposition a person is born with, homosexuality is a *lifestyle* and anyone should have the right to voice their opposition to it.
He is an arsehole regarding his moral views, but he is also an intelligent person. It's hard to follow this. The world is not just black and white. However, Mozilla did get a bit shitty last few years... lost support from lots of people because of the constant changes to the browser in a relatively incomprehensible manner. I remember the more glorious days of Mozilla. I really hope, though, they put themselves together.
Mozilla in the Eye of the Storm
