IT groups and a wide range of other businesses are so divided on proposed changes to U.S. patent law that a key lawmaker abruptly terminated work on patent reform legislation last week. The legislation addresses IP protection practices, known as “patent trolling,” that overwhelmingly affect computer software and IT components. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, removed patent law reform legislation from the committee’s calendar “because there is not sufficient support behind any comprehensive deal.”
Someone has to point out the obvious ... that when Congress originally set up the Patent Office, and subsequently made necessary changes to the legislation, they did so specifically to PROTECT THE INVENTORS AND DEVELOPERS of each innovation, to make sure that they received a financial reward for their innovation. They did NOT do it to benefit companies that buy the rights from the patent holders in order to charge inordinately high fees (and thereby PENALIZE subsequent purchases of the product or service) without providing any added value whatsoever.
This practice is DEAD WRONG, and should be stopped - by Congress! - immediately. There is NO upside to any unfettered continuation of this unfair scam - and scam it is! - from the point of the general public, which Congress is (at least theoretically) supposed to be serving.
