William Safire bid farewell to his column at the New York Times this week, but not because he’s retiring. Instead, this Pulitzer Prize-winning, former presidential speech writer is moving on to lead an organization concerned with what some call transhumanism. Transhumanism is the advocacy of using life-enhancing technology to improve the human condition. Savvy proponents spend a good deal of time thinking about the ethics involved in areas such as stem-cell research, genetic engineering and nanotechnology.
"The time to discuss these questions is now", be sure what is worth discussing and what is political/religious smoke&spin. Transforming Humans can be all good ... or extinction. > Did the Human using a Gun kill the victim, or did the gun kill the victim? Never doubt which to prosecute (human or gun) or which human is criminal. > Did the Human using Science and/or Technology destroy humanity, or did Science/Technology make humanity extinct. Never doubt which to prosecute (human or gun) or which human is criminal. > Did the Human withholding a lifesaving drug/technology kill the patient? ... ... human is criminal. > Don't be the stupid fool, Luddites of any ancient, religious, industrial, technology age are criminals that seek to maintain the past, and destroy the good things that may give humanity a better future. > Trying to impede/stop science and technology is a fools errand as history proves. We might be able to prevent/stop a criminal, if we act against the criminal and their activities. Apply nuclear proliferation concepts ... Power-Plants are good and Bombs are bad. It ain't the science or technology ... it is the application of the gun/... by a human.
