Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced Friday that it will launch a new 40 GB model of the PlayStation 3 in the UK, Europe, in the Middle East, Africa and Australasia. It will also drop the price of its 60 GB model of the video game console. The move, just in time for the 2007 holiday season, should add a little pep to sales of the PS3 in Europe. However, in the absence of tandem announcements in other territories — namely the U.S. — the news could leave gamers elsewhere feeling less than special and could backfire, leading to a slowdown in sales.
