Cisco, the dominant maker of routers and switches, appears to have designs on the blade server market. It has reportedly begun working on its own virtualized technology code-named “California Server.” It is said to run on Intel processors and Cisco’s own Nexus switch. Details are murky, but questions are plentiful: For instance, there is speculation as to whether Cisco is planning a general-purpose blade server or one designed for a specific use case, such as telephony.
Personally, I think it's a great idea. I have watched Cisco for years, and I have a lot of confidence that they can make a great server. And of course I am all in favor of more competition. Intel makes a great system, but maybe Cisco can improve on the market. I'm personally hoping that they will enter and what they bring will help increase internet speeds. In Atlanta the connection is frequently slow and that is with high speed cable. So I'm hoping their offerings will help relieve the strain down here. I say that because from what I have found, we have a server capacity shortage and while Comcast is doing their best, if another company would enter and maybe be outsourced I can see a lot of good coming from that.
