Dell’s latest product, the Streak, will make its U.S. debut on Friday, with consumers able to place pre-orders for the device starting Thursday. When Dell unveiled the Streak in May, it immediately grabbed the attention of tech-watchers. It sports a 5-inch color, multitouch screen, runs on the popular Android platform and is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other features and capabilities include 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless support; integrated GPS; a 5 MP camera with flash; and Micro SD memory that is expandable to 32 GB.
While there are unquestionably issues around how the Streak was brought to market, the views given air-time here are strangely rigid in terms of product innovation. For example, one of these "experts" pronounces the Streak "too big to be a smart phone" -- who made him the final word on what size is optimal for different market segments? The 5" screen is almost perfect for someone who doesn't want to spend a lifetime pinching to zoom -- I'd even go for a 6" screen, which is likely still pocket-able in a suit jacket. I do hope that Dell gets with it on the marketing front, but if they keep dropping the ball, then I surmise that another manufacturer will start supplying the 5" segment -- note the emergence of 4"+ screens on some other devices. At any rate, congratulations to Dell for bringing something different to market.
