Remember that holographic message from Princess Leia to Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars”? In five years’ time, mobile phone users will be able to interact with three-dimensional holograms of people they’re talking to, just like in the movie, according to an IBM prediction. It’s one of several future technologies IBM has predicted in its latest “Next Five in Five” report, which lists innovations that can change our lives over the following five years. Other technologies listed in this year’s report include IBM’s Cold Battery technology.
We all know that the holographic phones will be Android based. Jobs will probably say that 3D will "cheapen" his devices look. A-hole.
I really don't think the bandwidth will be available to show a true holographic image over a cellphone for at least ten years. What is the incentive for providers to make such an investment so that the technological "haves" can send 3-D pictures of cats? My guess is they are talking about something "like a hologram" but which really isn't'.
How to set up a 400G network (i.e., 100 times the fastest current network), and prevent the local carrier from dropping your bandwidth so much you can't receive the 3D data... Oh, right.. Somehow *getting* the 3D image there isn't the main problem, right?
