I had a chance last week to talk with the most secretive group inside Dell. They are kind of like the Q Division in the James Bond movies. These folks are pretty much unique in the industry, in that they build PCs and servers that are highly customized for firms that then place them into unusual solutions. This is the kind of machine that might go into a unique military vehicle as part of a piece of medical equipment, or in a special Aston Martin with unique weaponry.
My question is, will Windows again be a good, flexible, backwards compatible gaming platform. Everything else that Windows does, Linux does just as well, or better, and more safely, in spite of recent set backs, and cost effectively. But graphics drivers for Linux still suck relative to their Windows counterparts, and the last I checked Linux audio was still an unpardonable mess.
But of course this is a catch 22 for me. I'm rooting for Valve to succeed, and if Windows continues to be the premier pc and laptop gaming platform, then that will be a serious setback for Valve. But at the same time, I'm a gamer, and I want all my old games to work, and I still see pc's as the most flexible and powerful gaming platform available, especially for complex games like MMO's.
In the end I really don't care who carries the flag for pc gaming, I just want someone to do it with flexibility and style, so that pc's continue to be seen as a viable, and profitable, platform for game developers. But sadly, I'm not optimistic about Valve's dive into the Linux deep end, and unlike you Mr. Enderle, I'm not overflowing with optimism over Windows 10.
I hope I'm wrong. I'm not ready to step into the 21st Century yet and abandon my keyboard, mouse, and gaming peripherals. Console and touch screen gaming just doesn't have that level of immersion for this old fart...
