I joined a bunch of analysts in discussing Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s next move at a secret conclave last week. The company had just announced the sale of its IT services, which basically undid much of Mark Hurd’s work as CEO. It already had sold off PCs and printers, more than undoing Carly Fiorina’s earlier efforts. Granted, HPE spun it like it was an acquisition, but this move leaves the firm even more crippled, suggesting there’s more to come. To hear Meg Whitman speak, it was like she had completely lost touch with reality.
Does HP actually do well at anything anymore? I used to be impressed with HP a decade ago. Made some really good printers and back when Compaq was still around they made some good notebooks or was it laptops back then? As I type on a HP Envy today, one that just had a hard drive fail after two years and one that simply feels cheap but heavier than my old Compaq thanks to the heavy touch screen that's worthless. I also had a couple sad little HP Stream notebooks that lasted maybe a year. The PC industry including HP would benefit themselves by selling respectable and well built PC's. Leave to cheap stuff to Chromebook's and make something that lasts. Oh, and maybe reverse your pricing strategy where you sell cheap printers and expensive ink. How about maybe reversing that a bit. Because I have had a couple HP printers that never lasted beyond a set of ink cartridges.
What Will HPE Sell Next?
