Apple on Monday kicked off its Worldwide Developers Conference with the biggest-ever release of its iOS mobile operating system. CEO Tim Cook called iOS 10, coming this fall, “gigantic” and “the mother of all releases.” Among the new offerings in the upcoming version of iOS are more features in Messaging, all new designs for News, Music and Photos, and increased opportunities for developers to integrate their apps with Siri, Maps and Messages.
Over the last few years, I have become less impressed with Apple. Few month ago I sold off my last Mac and never plan to go back to one. First off it's more about OS X soon to be MacOS than the cost of Mac's which I find overkill for what I do. But for a while I accepted this was the price for quality hardware. Now, that's not so important, and while IOS is still the best mobile OS in my opinion. It's only because I still have some significant connection to the Apple ecosystem. With iTunes, Family has all iPhone's and it still seems more stable than Android. Apple's presentation focuses a lot on adding more integration between IOS and the MacOS/OSX. But how much of these new features make it to older hardware will be the question? I still have a older iPad Mini the original and even though it will support IOS 10. I have to wonder how well it will? Obviously IOS 9 was not good for it while it was supposed to help slower hardware. I did not experience that in my experience. Even after a couple IOS 9 updates, it still is more sluggish. Maybe the backwards compatibility is all about keeping resale of Apple hardware viable rather than usable? Hard to resell or trade something not supported anymore. I look forward to trying IOS 10 but am not holding out much hope it will fix older hardware sluggishness or even add a lot of new features. At least it will keep my old iPad Mini viable for trade value in case I need to upgrade in order to really experience IOS 10 properly.
