This is the question that keeps me up at night after seeing the news of Russian influence through social media, and the rapid rise of road deaths due to smartphone use. I wonder if the executives in these firms understand not only that dead customers don’t generate revenue, but also that some of the victims could end up being their own kids, spouses or parents. I’m also convinced that they haven’t grasped the fact that hostile foreign influence or distracted drivers could shorten their own life expectancies dramatically.
So Rob, speaking of fake news, what is your source of information for the statement that 'There has been a massive increase in cellphone-caused traffic accidents, OFTEN WHEN people looking at their phones have walked into traffic.'
In the linked article below, this is emphatically not the case - 'Recent American auto collision data show roughly the same thing: Electronic devices in the hands of walkers were a factor in just 25 of 23,240 pedestrian deaths from 2010 through 2014.' That's .00001% of pedestrian accidents had devices factored in - massive for sure.

So either you or the Globe and Mail are misinformed and spreading fake facts.
Here is a better link, sorry: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S000145751300119X
In recent years, pedestrian accidents have dropped overall. However, the number of pedestrian accidents caused by cell phone use has increased drastically. From 2005 to 2010, pedestrian accidents involving cell phones went from 256 to 1,506.
