The events of September 11th, combined with reports of increasingly vicious worms and
viruses, have spurred consumers and corporations to take a historic stance toward online
security: They're demanding it. Increased investments in security will draw resources
away from other areas of product and technology development, but promised technologies
like Web services will never materialize unless this near-term sacrifice is made.

There's no doubt about it ... the public's concerns about online credit card theft, vendor privacy breaches and even home package delivery theft have all seriously impaired the Net's evolution. I've thoroughly researched the Dot.com crash and I'm convinced the Net's business analysts totally underestimated the impact that these unresolved security concerns had in terms of driving up the pure-play sector's customer acquisition cost.

What was your initial reaction to news of the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack?
It demonstrates that all critical infrastructure sectors are at high risk of disruption by cybercriminals.
Everyone will be paying for this attack in the form of higher energy costs.
Governments need to work more closely with private industries to protect networks for the sake of public safety.
It's a global problem. An international alliance must be formed to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent future attacks.
