Talk about your anti-climatic endings. Thirteen years after the Sturm und Drang that was the government prosecution of Microsoft on antitrust grounds, the mammoth, multi-million dollar case has ended with a straightforward, run-of-the-mill legal proceeding. The case will end on May 12 without any further oversight hearings, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said at the last hearing held this week in the District of Columbia. The government had no objection. Microsoft declined to comment beyond its formal statement, which was that it was pleased it was over.

no anti-trust against MSFT = No AAPL or GOOG

Prior to the commencement of anti-trust proceedings against Microsoft Apple was on the ropes and probably would not have survived, or would have dropped its computer lines as soon as ipods started making money. Although the "browser wars" were central to the anti-trust case the underlying principal was that microsoft was illegally engaging in anti-competitive behavior in a variety of areas because of its near monopoly in desktop operating systems. If not for the anti-trust supervision in the 2000's the minute microsoft realized the potential threat posed by Google it would have squashed Google like a bug. It would have just started to give away or sell search adds at cost, and the search performance of Google on windows would have mysteriously slowed down. If Apple had survived to actually start making money from ipods, itunes, and iphones they might have survived, but at a lower level - ie no imacs, mac books, etc. I don't see how MSFT could have done much about Facebook, but Google would have been toast, and Apple would have been a much smaller company.
