Are Gap's new Web sites good enough to make up for the fact that the company turned away thousands of customers and millions of dollars in business while it got them up and running over the past two weeks? The answer appears to be yes, analysts said, thanks to a spate of promising innovations on Gap.com, BananaRepublic.com and OldNavy.com. In fact, the big question is how long it will take for competitors to catch up, and at what price.

Eliminating the need to go to a new page to view product details and subsequently having to return is something that usability expert Jared Spool has described as "pogo-sticking".
We at RelocationCentral have implemented the same behavior on our apartment search site (http://www.relocationcentral.com). When registered users see the list of apartments that match their criteria, they can click on the "complete details" link (comparable to the "QuickLook" links on Gap.com). This pops up an interactive brochure on the screen without going to a new page.
We're seeing a significant trend on major Web sites to reduce the number of page transfers using techniques such as these.
