The popularity of digital audio devices like the Apple iPod has allowed people to easily take music with them for training sessions and outdoor adventures. However, earbud-type earphones are usually less than optimal for athletes. In addition to mediocre sound quality, standard earbuds may fall out during rigorous activity or in cold weather. Until recently, I'd put up with the cheapo earbuds that came with my iPod.

Just a thought,
I do like music, I can appreciate wide, crystal clear, open sound from narrow, noise, close one.
Sometimes I take iPod's earbuds to listen whatever that some sort of "privacy" is required and it makes me realise how big the gap is between good ones and bad ones.
But $180+ (not to mention the $550 one), for an earbuds? Isn't it too expensive!!

There's a wide range of "in-ear monitors" from under $100 on up. I've been using them for many years. I can't imagine anyone regretting the purchase of them, they're soooo much better than ear buds.
