Katy Perry's new song "Roar" is a hit, and so is her video, which has drawn in an impressive 70 million or so viewers. Those viewers, by default, have watched Perry cavorting about with the latest from Nokia -- the Lumia -- and not, it must be noted, something from Apple's product line. Is that significant? Well, in the context of one music video, no, it isn't. Yet it resonates when considered in a larger theme -- namely, that Apple's products are now supposedly for the older set while younger and hopelessly hip consumers go for other products.

This is the perfect opportunity for an app design company. If the company ceases this moment to create an perfect app for this, it can make huge profits.

Fitst of all, basing an entire feature on the words of Hyun-Yeul Lee means NOTHING. It's the FIRST Smartphone with a 64-bit chip. Yes, you could argue rightly there's not a software that takes advantage of that but that is hardly "a fashion statement." It is by its very definition of a hardware upgrade that is INNOVATIVE. It is the first smartphone with a tested fingerprint ID system which could lead to pay by smartphones. Again, other phones have offered it but you know it works as reviews have stated - again, hardly a fashion statement. In other words, that guy is an idiot.

Of course, it is an opinion and everyone is entitled to it but you start with that premise and then present facts that are the entire opposite of your opinion.

Nevermind the product placement in a Katy Perry video, I'm sure very popular but with 360 million Americans, how many people have viewed that video? A few million, sure but does product placement translae into sales? Sony movies always feature Vaio laptops, Sony is not in the top 5 of laptop sales.

naming something hip or not hip is a moving target. Sure, VMA ratings may be down but mostly every network is down as there are now 1,000 channels including non-Tv viewing outlets like YouTube ... why bother watching MTV, the Tv channel when you can stream it, watch it on demand or just watch clips on YouTube? So, saying MTV ratings are down is like saying McD is not as popular ... it might be true and untrue based on any facts you can throw out there but 2013 is NOT 2006 or 1990 or 1955 ... so randomly dropping a "fact" out of context means nothing.

Bottom line - Apple is the top tier brand of CE worldwide. It is accepted as the best, most customer friendly, most user friendly hardware-software integrated products. It is expensive for most of the world. Beyond that, there are fans and non-fans, haters, fanbois, fansgrls and contrarians who want anything but because they feel if everyone thinks it's the best, it cannot be for me.

As you note, toddlers are handed ipads. as parents, why would you buy your kid anything less than the best - when the best is only $100 more - it's not like buying a corolla or a BMW 3series. as for "hipness," how about the market share of Apple computer in colleges now hovers around the 70% mark?

The fact is that Apple's competotors like to say their products are fads and not "hip." Why? Because they can claim Apple just spends more on marketing (of course, Apple actually spends less on marketing and certainly less on hype - look at their ads. Here's how it works - they show you real people using that feature). Why claim the iphone is a fad? Because, otherwise, they would have to point out that they make inferior hardware, software and provid4e poorly customer service (where is their 24/7 free in person/in-store tech support FOR LIFE of your product)?
