Microsoft's much-anticipated Zune portable music player appears "underwhelming" and could end up being "another classic case of overpromising and underdelivering" by the world's biggest software company, said an analyst for American Technology Research on Wednesday. Apple Computer's iPod has driven the company's success of late, and competitors ranging from Dell to Creative Technology to Samsung Electronics have launched rival products that so far have failed to even come close to touching that of the iPod.

ATR's research report makes some compelling points.
But the report errs in stating that Microsoft is cutting out 75 percent of the potential market by aiming at high-end devices. Microsoft plans a whole suite of Zune products and services, competing at every level of portable audio player, including Shuffle and nano. Some of these devices may be released in early 2007. So I think we can expect a full suite of Zune products and services before long.
