Software company Microsoft has officially declared war on Linux, the open-source operating system that threatens to shatter its global monopoly. The battleground is Britain and the prize a three-year deal to supply software to the government. The contract is not due to be signed until September, as the current contract has until early 2005 to run, but Microsoft is a firm favorite. This win would follow last week's victory for Microsoft in supplying software to the London borough of Newham.

Funny, I thought Microsoft 'independant' studies prove Windows has a lower TCO than Linux? Why do they need to offer huge discounts and free services to get contracts? It's cheaper anyway right?
