The British NHS has struck a money-saving deal with computer giant Microsoft amid reports of spiraling costs to its national information technology program. The UK Department of Health said its "landmark agreement" with Microsoft to renew the license for desktop products would save an estimated 330 million pounds (US$625 million) on the current deal. It was also announced that Microsoft would be investing 40 million pounds (US$74 million) to develop health-specific software applications to improve patient care and safety across the NHS.
