Hewlett-Packard has shaken up the high-tech industry, saying it will work with Apple Computer to build its own version of the Apple iPod and will include Apple's digital jukebox software on its new PCs. The partnership provided the biggest surprise so far during a hectic week of one-upmanship at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Analysts generally saw the HP-Apple partnership as a threat to two competitors: Dell,
whose own portable MP3 player has struggled to gain traction, and Microsoft.

Apple Making MP3 Player, Not HP

The tone of the story incorrectly infers that HP will be making a player. Apple is going to deliver a finished product to HP. Phil Schiller of Apple says it will be an iPod (but not called that) in HP Blue. The start-up screen will show the Apple logo as well.

Apple's iPod

Apple will make the product, with HP's name on the outside, and I'll bet Apple will do the same for IBM. Remember, Apple's G5 computers have IBM inside, and it's a wonder their computers don't bear the label "IBM inside." But then, Apple is copied by its competitors: when it comes to new ideas and excellent integration and implementation, it sets the pace for the followers.
