America Online announced an overhaul Thursday aimed at reviving the troubled Internet giant. It cuts bureaucracy, reduces the roles of some AOL veterans and puts new emphasis on high-speed Internet and ventures abroad. "It allows for swifter decision-making," said new CEO Jon Miller. "In the past, there's been a loss of momentum and ambivalence" about key strategies, especially broadband. "Now we're clearly embracing it." But others saw the shake-up as a housecleaning by parent company AOL Time Warner.

AOL's woes are somehow not surprising.
Viewed as an oversized conglomerate (complete
with Time-Warner), the rising cost of internet
access via AOL reflects their greed.
What does the consumer get in return? A very slow internet connection/download, a toolbar that
takes up about three inches of your screen,
ads/promos that do little to enhance the web experience. AOL has lost its competitive edge
and this is the result.
