The growing acceptance of bring-your-own-device use in the enterprise comes with promise and perils. Allowing users to own and maintain and work on computing and mobile devices of their choosing is starting to make sense for more organizations. The experiences of one company, Quest Software, which has begun supporting BYOD with the full blessing of IT, serve as an example. This strategy has had benefits far beyond just the users' sense of empowerment.

We have struggled with BYOD since we are a hospital and we have HIPAA security issues to deal with, and we are too small to get a large BYOD system like what Quest Software did with Dell, although it seems like a great system. Since we couldn't afford a large system, we had to start something by trying to solve our biggest issue, which was doctors texting patient info to admin and other doctors. We did this by giving them Tigertext app for thier devices which is a secure texting app that is HIPAA complient. The result is that we increased the doctor/admin productivity and allowed the doctors handle more patients. There are now a lot of options out there for BYOD, so companies will need to do a lot of reseach to find the right applications for them which might be app based like tigertext, or a large MDM system like Quest/Dell.
