After an exceedingly tough year for businesses in virtually every sector, reports of online sales Cyber Monday offer hope for the turnaround so many people have been waiting for. The Internet has been called by many "the great equalizer." One of the best things about selling online is that virtually anyone can start a business on the Net with far fewer fixed costs than a brick-and-mortar approach. That has made e-tailing an incredibly popular form of self-employment, especially as more and more people find themselves looking to make a living.

It is true, niche businesses have the potential to do very well and many already are. What is important to remember is that if the shop is specialized, it probably carries detail named products for which shoppers will search. Therefore, successful revenues can depend on how easily and accurately the site search of a niche shop can read and identify the queries customers are conducting. If a shopper cannot find it, they will not be able to buy it.

i def agree that going niche is a great way to get started in e-coomerce. one of the main benifits we have expereinced from this approach is that you can get ranked in search in niche catagories much faster than going for a broad approach. we launched hoodiepeople.com last year as the worlds premier shop for cool hoodies and enjoyed the benifits of a focused approach in many ways.
1) Organic Search ranking
2) having a key differentiator when approaching picky vendors
3) building a social media startegy based on peoples love of hoodies
4) virtually unlimited vertical oppertunity

At some point we may start adding a few complimentary catagories but we have yet to substantially cover the hoodie niche so that remians the core focus.
