Google, the popular Internet search engine, named Eric Schmidt as its new chief executive
Monday. The appointment of Schmidt, who previously led software manufacturer Novell, marks
a big transformation from Google's roots as a Stanford University student project to a
more seasoned company.

Schmidt replaces Larry Page, 28, who co-founded Google in 1998 along with Sergey Brin, 27.
Page and Brin will stay on as co-presidents of the Mountain View firm. The following are
excerpts from an interview conducted with Schmidt, who was named chairman of Google in
March.

Schmidt did nothing for Novell. I like Google but my bet is that he will not be able to help them either.
