Angry Birds, Mad Money
May 07, 2012
Today in international tech news: The makers of "Angry Birds" report crazy numbers. Who's Afraid of a Big Bad Hacking Story?
May 07, 2012
It's been a cheerily good spring for FOSS fans here in the Linux blogosphere, so we may perhaps be forgiven for our utter shock and disbelief at the affront recently committed against us by a certain brick-and-mortar purveyor of books and magazines. Barnes & Noble yanked the very excellent Linux Format magazine from its U.S. shelves -- apparently because of a cover story on the topic of "hacking."
Nvidia Levels Up With New Gaming Graphics Card
May 04, 2012
A new video card from Nvidia or competitor AMD isn't usually all that newsworthy, but when the latest card arrives with eight Graphics Processing Clusters, and a total of 4 GB of GDDR5 video memory that runs at 6.008 GHz over two 256-bit memory, that is enough for hard-core enthusiasts to take pause. For everyone else, the release of a video card that carries a price point just under $1,000 will certainly draw attention.
Shazam Encore Pretty Much Nails 'Name That Tune'
May 04, 2012
I think I may have asked Shazam Encore to do the impossible. I had downloaded the app just before a planned lunch that included a sojourn to my neighborhood car wash -- which conveniently features a simple Mexican eatery. Sitting on the bench in the shade after the nosh, I detected the faint yet unmistakable tinkling sound of elevator music above the roar of the blowing drier. "Aha," I thought, wits about me, "Shazam reckons it can identify songs instantly?"

Waiting for Apple to Charge the Gates of TV Land
May 04, 2012
Speculation about Apple producing a television set that will revolutionize how we watch entertainment at home has been percolating for months, as has the arrival time for the super set. Initially, it was predicted to arrive in time for the 2011 holiday season; then it was going to share the stage with the new iPad in 2012; and when that didn't happen, it was pushed to sometime in 2012 or the first half of 2013.
Microsoft Pins $99 Price Tag on Xbox Bundle
May 03, 2012
Microsoft is reportedly planning to release its Xbox 360 bundle beginning next week for $99. If rumors are to be believed, it could rival a TV infomercial's promise -- "but wait, there's more" -- by including the Kinect motion control sensor with a 4 GB version of the game console. However, as with the infomercials, there is fine print, which in this case details a monthly subscription fee of $15.

Amazon: Hey, Gang - Let's Put On a Show!
May 02, 2012
Amazon is taking the long-expected step of developing its own content for Amazon Instant Video. It is doing so via its content development division, Amazon Studios, which uses audience feedback to suggest content for its customers. Now it has pushed this model further, though, inviting series creators to upload proposals for comedy and children's programming. Those selected will be distributed through Amazon Instant Video.

Linux and Gaming: Full Steam Ahead
April 30, 2012
"It has taken longer than most anyone would have anticipated, but the fact remains that Valve is in fact creating a native Linux port of their Steam game distribution client and of the Source Engine to run natively on Linux," read the announcement on Phoronix on Wednesday. Think gaming is trivial? Think again: In a matter of seconds, the topic was on fire on Slashdot and throughout the Linux blogosphere.
Smart TV May Be Too Smart for Its Own Good
April 27, 2012
If you've been anywhere near a consumer electronics retailer lately or have leafed through the consumer electronics circulars and ads that supplement Sunday newspapers, you've no doubt noticed the words "Smart TV" shouting out at you. And if you've been wondering what a Smart TV is, or whether whatever it is may be smarter than you are, read on.

Can Nintendo Play a Winning Come-From-Behind Game?
April 26, 2012
Nintendo has reached a dismal milestone: For the first time ever, it posted a fiscal year operating loss -- down $458 million for the year just ended. It is an ignominious turn of events for the company, which created legendary games like "Super Mario Brothers" and innovative devices like the Wii. It's clear that not even Nintendo could withstand the paradigm shift that mobile devices have triggered.

Following Intel's Ivy Bridge Road
April 25, 2012
The tech industry loves the concept of new innovation to the point where product launches all too often call to mind infatuated elders showing off photos of their latest grandkids. But practicality tends to drive the manufacturing side of the IT business, with consistency trumping innovation. As a result, products arrive at market on time, retailers and their customers don't get grumpy, vendors hit their sales targets, and shareholders are happy campers.

'Soulcaliber': A Beautiful Mashy-Slashy Mess
April 24, 2012
Action games can be tricky to pull off on iOS. Everything's done through a touchscreen, so you don't have as much tactile feedback -- there are no buttons under your fingertips to let you feel exactly where you need to touch at precisely the right moment, while your eyes are busy with the screen.
Netflix Struggles to Right Itself
April 23, 2012
What a difference a year makes. Netflix, the tech industry's golden child last spring, has been struggling to overcome a series of missteps it made later in 2011. There is guarded optimism that when the company posts its fiscal first quarter report after the closing bell on Monday, some progress will be evident. However, Netflix is expected to report a net loss of $9 million to $27 million for the quarter.
