Your analogy to Harry Potter is flawed. We're certainly not talking about an entire volume created by a single author. A more correct analogy: A fifth grade class puts together a collection of poems and prints copies for parents and friends. A publisher calls and complains that the collection includes one or more of their copyrighted works. The school apologizes and offers to remove the items in question. The publisher refuses to identify which poem(s) they own because the school would remove them(?!) Then they state they now own the entire collection and everyone who’s read the book must pay them $699.00 per retina. Oh, and the publisher turns out be a big, fat liar.
