With smartphones becoming ubiquitous and more and more people using mobile devices both at work and at home, enterprises are increasingly looking to make use of mobile applications. Small and medium-sized businesses are apparently beginning to pick up on this trend, and many of them are turning to developers to create custom mobile apps for them. Apple and Google recently launched efforts to make mobile app development easier, so why would SMBs want to pay extra to app devs instead of using those tools to create their own apps?

We too are seeing tremendous interest among SMBs for custom mobile business apps that connect to company back end systems. Generic apps don't cut it and App Inventor type tools lack the needed capabilities. Mobile browsers are limited and rely on imperfect data connections. But there is another alternative besides developing custom apps for each mobile OS. A mobile business application platform lets an SMB design a custom solution once, without coding, and deploy it to Android, Windows Mobile, iPhone, etc. That's what we do if you want to check it out: www.formotus.com
I think that comparing Visual Basic to tinker toys is a horrible analogy. At my place of employment POS, Inventory, and many various custom productivity apps are written in VB6. Interestingly enough, our FedEx Ship Manager software is written in VB as well.
