Keith Regan's Opinion: Trick or Treat at Webvan Headquarters
Posted by: Allen Wilson 2001-11-02 02:00:37
As a former employee of Webvan.com, formerly HomeGrocer.com employed at the Azusa and Fullerton warehouses.

I was very proud of my job as an Associate, which I had high aspirations to retire with the company. Mr. Regan's account was true at the Foster City Headquarters. I am not going to single out any department, staff, or management on incidents that had occurred during my unfortunate short tenure. There were times I had aspired to be on the Management Team, where I would have prevented such abuses, because as a member of a proud company, I would not have allowed it to happen!

The company went over its head on expansion plans, did not have an aggressive screening process for hiring new employees and lacked clearly defined goals and objectives for all departments. I do see the opportunity for future dot-com companies to prosper.

July 9, 2001 was the saddest day of my employment with Webvan. My heart sank, many unanswered questions remained, and the future seemed probable if the right ingredients were in the bowl. The experience has given me an unbelievable opportunity for growth development, relationship building, strong organizational skills, but time was too short. I hope someone will read and understand what could have been, but did not. It is time to return to the basics and value of work, organization, respect and productivity.

I know about the problems with Webvan's management first-hand. Too many chiefs (management) and not enough indians. They lacked everything a good company would have.
The three main faults are:

*Unable to create goals that are real and achievable
*Good management - Upper and lower
*Overall Grocery business procedures

There were some nice employees, but nice does not necessarily make a good employee. Having a company like Albertson's with their broad range of warehouses already in place, they have easier ways of expanding this type of business.

Bottom line, they did not know how to make money in the upper reaches of officers. Go work for Albertson's ;) It's over.
