In the days before Apple split with Macworld, fans of the company's products used to pack the event in feverish anticipation of watching Steve Jobs tell them what new goodies his company had in store for them. How things have changed: The show has a new name, Macworld/iWorld, and an actor who will be playing the late Jobs in an forthcoming biopic took center stage. While new products used to be the headliners at Macworld, top billing at Macworld/iWorld on Thursday belonged to Ashton Kutcher, star of the film JOBS .
"Macworld Expo: Stronger Since Apple Split"
Are you really that delusional? Not only has Apple left the show, vendors, attendees and press have left in droves too. Attendance is down from a high of around 45,000 before Apple left to, if they are lucky, 20,000 this year. That's NOT "stronger since the split".
As much as I hate to contradict my friends Michael Gartenberg and Tim Bajarin, consumers are demonstrably NOT interested in going to the show - the attendance figures bear that out. The show has demonstrably NOT "actually gotten pretty strong". Fewer vendors than when Apple was exhibiting. Less floor space than when Apple was exhibiting. Little to no national media attention any more. Adobe, Microsoft, Quark all long gone.
There are serious problems with the way the show is being put on and the media sticking their heads in the sand and ignoring those problems contribute and even accelerate the day when the show will sadly be no more.
