Microsoft today filed 117 federal lawsuits against unnamed defendants, accusing them of a high-tech form of identity theft known as "phishing." The lawsuits, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, accuses the "John Doe" defendants of using mass e-mail or pop-up ads to coerce consumers into revealing personal information such as bank account information, passwords or social security numbers.

Microsoft should sue themselves. Instead of making all these head fakes trying to give the impression they are serious about the prevention of Identity theft they should get off the pot, stop the the stealth game and finally and openly endorse the Trusted Computing concept. Most PC OEMs are shipping new platforms enabled with the Trusted Platform Module. But really, the press is to blame as much for this increase of identity theft by not doing sound research and the lack of cobverage of this new technology which would completely prevent on-line identiy theft and would prevent that data of stolen laptops gets into false hands.
Do something real Microsoft!
