I follow the following rules to protect myself from the (possible) harm caused by all the spammers:
(1) Never Never Never send a request to remove my name from their mailing list. 90% of the return email addresses are nonfunctional, 7% are used to inform others that it is active account, so only 3% are genuine ones.
(2) Never open email from the one you do not know; never open email containing attachment from ones you know unless you expect it.
(3) Never open email if it has generic/suspicious title. My cousin sends me email with lots of attachments but puts a personal title in his native language that I know that nobody can copy.
(4) Request your friends to forward emails (chain letters) but after stripping email addresses. They will do a favor to themselves too.
I believe that no law can tackle the committed spammers so why not take preventive steps and choke them by not paying attention.
